This hand-painted nicho is a Day of the Dead tribute to Mexico's beloved Catrina character. The hand-painted, heart-shaped, red frame is decorated with blue flowers. The frame has a hinged door that opens to a compartment holding a printed image of La Catrina, surrounded by glitter on the walls. You can add your own tiny decorations, milagros, coins or flowers to the compartment. This lovely nicho will hang on a wall using the ring on the back. It measures 8 inches tall. ABOUT THE ART:
The tradition of making nichos goes back to the Spanish Colonial period of Mexican history. There were used as shrines for patron saints or pictures of loved ones. Tin work (hojalata) is one of Mexico's most colorful crafts, and popular with tourists and collectors of folk art. Tin can be easily bent, crimped, cut and soldered to form intricate shapes. It has a brilliant appearance similar to silver, but it is also surprisingly light and durable. In San Miguel de Allende, where these nicho boxes come from, many new designs are keeping workshops busy producing picture frames, wall decor and plaques, Christmas decorations, rattles and a wide variety of whimsical toys, all painted in brilliant lacquer paints and enamels.
