One of our favorite trips on our travels in Oaxaca is to the village of San Pedro Cajonos! Situated high in the mountains three hours from Oaxaca City, this is one of the most idyllic settings that one may ever find! Perched at the top of the mountains, with sweeping views of the surrounding canyons and distant pueblos, San Pedro Cajonos kisses the clouds and shines in its art forms. One of the most famous of San Pedro Cajonos artists, is the Blas Family of wood carvers. Their style is so unique, and can be identified readily upon sight. Bright colors, and fine painting are their hallmarks. I absolutely love the Blas Family wood carvings!
Hilario's giraffe wood carvings are so cool! Full of whimsy and fun, and bright and deep colors in the painting. For such an economical piece, these giraffes are packed with a difficult to achieve sense of motion, from the tilting of his head to the positioning of the spindly legs! Both the mane and the tail are crafted out of the traditional ixtle fiber, that is made from the fiber of the maguey cactus, and then the tips are painted with blue paint for an added flair! I love these carvings. Nicely painted and a great size, it will make an affordable addition to your collection. The piece is signed by the artist, and the ears and ossicones (looks like horns) are removable for safe shipping.
