CHEERFUL TALL SNAIL OAXACA WOOD CARVING
BY THE HIGHLY TALENTED WOOD CARVER DAVID BLAS
WONDERFUL WORK IN AN ECONOMICAL PIECE! WHIMSICAL AND UNIQUE!
One of our favorite trips on our travels in Oaxaca is to the village of San Pedro Cajonos! Situated high in the mountain Sierras three hours from Oaxaca City, this is one of the most idyllic settings that one may ever find! Perched at the top of the mountains, with sweeping views of the surrounding canyons and distant pueblos, San Pedro Cajonos kisses the clouds and shines in its art forms. One of the most famous of San Pedro Cajonos artists, is the Blas Family of wood carvers. Their style is so unique, and can be identified readily upon sight. Bright colors, and fine painting are their hallmarks. David Blas is arguably the best known carver from the Blas Family, and we love the sense of humor and whimsy in his work! This snail is one of our favorites!! Both David and his son Jose craft these adorable carvings, but David tends to use more subdued colors in the painting of the shells, while still maintaining a great sense of color and cheer. The antenna are removable and the body separates from the shell for safe shipping, and the piece is signed by the artist.
