Oaxacan Alejibres Handmade Wood Carvings Mexican Folk Art Pepe Santiago + 2, EUC

Description

Three Oaxacan handmade, colorfully hand painted Alebrije wood carvings, Mexican Folk Art, all in excellent used condition!  The medium sized, coral colored figure is signed "Pepe Santiago '98" and measures 6 1/4" in height and 2" in width.  The smallest figure which is green and brown is signed "San Martin Ticajelte," which is a small village known for its colorful fantastical creatures hand carved by local artisans.
This small figure measures 5 1/2" in height and 1 1/2" in width.  The largest carving is marked "Mexico 1997" and measures 7 1/2" in height and 2 1/4" in width.  Its ridged back and tail are painted dark blue, and the body is coral and teal.
These whimsical figures are made out of copal wood, chosen not only for its carving properties but also its cultural significance, as the resin of this tree has been used as a type of incense, burned for its fragrance, for centuries.  Alebrijes have become icons of Mexican culture, appearing in animated works like Disney-Pixar's "Coco."
