This ceramic Xoloitzcuintli dog was made by hand.  The designs and colors are bright and hand painted.
This One of the most rare and unique dog breeds in the world, the Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo (“sho-lo”) for short, has been around for a very long time. Despite their long history and reputation, Xolos remain quite rare in the U.S., so you may not have met one in real life.
The style of the ceramic is called Barro Brunido, or "Burnished Clay" is one of the oldest known pre-Hispanic pottery techniques and the foundation from which numerous other clay techniques have been derived.  Even the colorful paints and slips are derived from local clays and oxides.
This exceptional collectible folk art piece was made in Mexico by Moises Rodriguez B.
His shop is located in Patzcuaro, Mexico.
As one 5 of Salvador Vasquez' apprentices, Moises learned the technique of Barro Bruñido from one of the “Great Masters”.
He continues to combine his work with ceramic and wood.
He has become very interested in preserving some of Tonalá’s figurative work from the early 1920s and often uses depictions of some of these wonderfully naïve characters and village scenes in his work.
The temperate and tropical forests of the state provides of the state’s main economic resources, mostly managed by indigenous and mestizo groups providing both material and fuel.
The wood used by workshops in many small communities translate into one of the main sources of employment in the state.
Individual artisans create each piece from selecting the wood to polishing the final product.
